The fortresses that make up the ‘New Dutch Waterline’ are a definite must for any visitor to Utrecht and the surrounding areas. These city defences consisting of 46 fortresses and well over 900 hydraulic engineering works were used to flood and defend the area when it came under attack. During the month of September the city of Utrecht organises a National fortress month with many activities and tours centred around the whole network of fortresses. A number of the individual fortresses are open to visitors throughout the year.
