Amsterdam is not a city where you want to have a car as parking is almost impossible so car hire is not recommended unless you plan to visit other parts of Holland during your stay. If you do wish to hire a car then there are a number of car hire companies at Schiphol Airport

From The Airport:
By Train – There is a direct train link from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Central Station that leaves every 10 minutes and costs €3.60 for a single one way ticket. The journey time from the airport to Amsterdam is 20 minutes.
By Taxi – Taxis are available from the airport to Amsterdam and cost around €40


Around Amsterdam:
GVB is the public transport company of Amsterdam providing metro, tram and bus services throughout Amsterdam and its surrounding areas. Single tickets can be purchased onboard or 24hour, 48hour and 72hour passes can be purchased from GVB ticket offices located in Stations. Strips of tickets are also available from most news agents and supermarkets.

The Canal Bus runs every 40 minutes from 9:50 until 7:25 with 14 stops along three different routes throughout the city. Day passes cost €16 and are valid until 12:00 the next day.

Bicycles are the most popular form of transport around Amsterdam and there are a number of companies scattered around the city that offer bicycles for rental at around €8 a day.

Taxis are available throughout the city and at taxi stands on the main squares. To order a taxi call city cab on 0900.677.7777. Rides cost €1.80 per km regardless of the time of day and a 5%-10% tip is expected.

Getting out:
The Best way of getting out of Amsterdam and seeing other parts of The Netherlands is via train from the Central station. Trains depart every hour to The Hague (1hour) and Rotterdam (1 hour 30 minutes) and to many other destinations in Europe such as Antwerp, Brussels, Paris and London.
